My Vegetable Garden- Planting the Seeds

In my family, we love to cook - especially with fresh herbs and vegetables. So this year, we decided to plant a vegetable garden.

Empty Garden Plot
It's a bit of an experiment  because we've never really tried to grow our own vegetables before, but hopefully we end up with at least a few delicious things to eat. We had some open area at the South end of our house that gets a lot of sun, so we decided to build some planters and plant our vegetables there. Originally we wanted to start planting in early May so we bought this Raised Garden Bed Kit from Costco, but when we opened the box, there weren't enough pieces to build the whole garden plot, so we had to call Costco and wait a while longer for our extra pieces to arrive.
Putting in the Soil

Finally everything got here and we built the garden plots. It was pretty easy to build these kits, but it took some time and some work. We were finally ready to plant by the end of June, hopefully next year we can start earlier! We planted lots of seeds and a few small plants. Some of the herbs we planted are cilantro, mint, basil, tarragon and rosemary, and some of the vegetables we planted are carrots, beets, swiss chard, peas and beans. We also planted grapes and blueberries just to see if anything will grow!

I really hope that in a few weeks we will have some awesome summer vegetables and herbs. I'll keep you updated on the progress of my plants!

I'm just an amateur gardener, but if you want some more information about gardening in Calgary, here is a link to a cool blog about kid friendly gardening called Calgary Garden Coach. Maybe I can learn some tips from them!
